For your consideration are two sets of Japanese Samurai sword rayskin Samegawa panels. These items are from the Edo Period of Japan and were used under the silk wrappings of the tsuka (sword handle). Cut panels like these were more for show than strength, though even cut panels offered resistance to slippage of the ito wrappings. Tsukas were sometimes fully wrapped with a larger single piece of rayskin which adds immensely to the structural rigidity of the handle. The longer of these two pairs measures a minimum 19.8 cm and are just over 2 cm in width. The shorter pair measures a minimum 15 cm in length and 2 cm in width. It is not the least bit uncommon for these panels to be pieced together or patched. The longer set would likely be suitable for a katana length handle. Please ask if you would like more details.
Samegawa or ray skin is derived as a stingray byproduct from rays that were harvested as a food source. Once the rayskin is processed much the way leather is processed, the samegawa panels or wraps are cut to size. The sandpaper-like nodes of the samegawa are very durable, and the rayskin itself is very stiff and hard when shaped and dried, much like leather or rawhide dog toys. To shape the samagawa, it can be soaked in water for several minutes, then dried to conform to the exact shape of your handle. It can be cut with tin snips, or ground using the disc portion of a bench sander or a Dremel tool grinder. Rayskin is highly valued, and typically the larger nodes are more valuable. There is a small single piece from the entire rayskin that has the enlarged central Emperor nodes which is especially valuable.
