14 inches tall.......This piece was made by one of the best Austrian silversmiths, J C Klinkosch who also worked for Austria’s last Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria, King of Hungary and monarch of other states in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was THE longest reigning Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary and part of Habsburg- Lorraine (Austrian Branch) one of the oldest royal houses that provided monarchs in almost all of Europe. Only upper middle class and noble families could afford silver pieces made by J C Klinkosch which makes this even more rare! In the early to mid 19th century he partnered up with Stefan Mayerhofer to expand his business which was known as Mayerhofer & Klinkosch but he soon broke off the partnership and renamed the company as Klinkosch J C between 1860-1870 which I believe when this piece was made since his initials are just his name engraved instead of Mayerhofer. He held the Imperial Warrant in 1855 to the Court of Franz Josef and was then knighted by Emperor Franz Josef 1879 changing his name to Joseph Carl (Ritter Von Klinkosch). The silver bowl has his name engraved as J C Klinkosch as well as the head of the Austrian black eagle located on the coat of arms. I believe this piece was part of Emperor Franz Josef’s silver collection in his palace even though upper middle class and noble families could afford some silver made by Klinkosch which were probably smaller and thinner pieces of silver. This had to be owned by the Emperor because it is heavy meaning this piece was very costly and would surpass the means of any upper middle class and noble families. The large silver bowl is representative of Franz Josef’s presence as Emperor of the Austro- Hungarian Empire, his power, and wealth over others. He was the embodiment of the Habsburg Empire through its final decades.
