Art Nouveau Abbesses métro station in Montmartre
Hand printed Cyanotype
Hemp/Muslin/Cotton .. let's call it HMC for short
The entrance to the Abbesses métro station is a masterpiece of Art Nouveau architecture: It is one of the two surviving métro entrances of the kind in Paris. It is situated on the busy square of Place des Abbesses in the 18th arrondissement at the foot of the Montmartre hill.
The Art Nouveau design image is paired with a wonderful blend of HMC. HMC is a natural blend of lightweight and breathable fabric, that lends itself to hand printing with photosensitive dye.
Cyanotype is a printing process dating back to the 1850s. I hand-coated the silk with photosensitive chemicals; I converted my photograph to a digital negative, sandwich the fabric and negative, and expose to sunlight. While the negative may be used again, each print will differ slightly: The time of day, the time of year can alter the exposure.
This fabric has natural slubs for a more interesting look. Cotton adds softness to hemp, and stability to muslin. This natural blend is perfect for the orchid.
To the HMC, I fuse an acid-free polyester, ultra-lightweight interfacing to provide a bit of stability to the HMC fabric that would love to stretch, flex and breathe.
The image is matted to fit a 7.5x7.5 opening of the 12.5x12.5 frame.
My original photograph of Abbesses métro station was captured on film in the early 1990s. Over the years, I've printed Abbesses métro station on many substrates including ceramic, stone paper and now, the Abbesses Metro has morphed into a one-of-a-kind print on HMC. I love the results!
