What a stellar work and nonpareil addition to your contemporary art collection. Australian Aboriginal art is the art with the longest continuous tradition on the planet, clocking in at approximately forty thousand years. Maureen Nampajinpa (today Hudson) is now an internationally prominent painter producing glorious minimalist abstractions based on Aboriginal brushstrokes, works which are reminiscent of op art paintings by Bridget Riley and others of that cognitively-inflected streak. If you look into the artist's more recent work, you will see that the paintings often are charged with a kinetic feel, almost as if they are alive and pulsating with energy, as if we were looking into the inner workings of a feverishly active cell in a body. It's an amazing effect, and feeling this irreal motility even in photos of her art on a screen, one wonders how much more pronounced the effect must be in person. This is clearly an early work by the artist and here she is working more within the strictures of traditional Aboriginal representation. I believe that a second party was recording the facts about the artist on this plate, hence the misspelling of the name. Clearly, this individual wanted to get down salient facts such as the artist's location and some of the symbolic meanings portrayed. I imagine the artist relayed these facts to the art dealer or retailer who was representing her. I'm not sure if the serpent is one of the rainbow serpents who carved the world in the Dreamtime mythology. Usually the solid circular area represents the location of a watering hole. The artist has thoughtfully provided the meaning of three of the symbols on the plate. This could be researched further. Gorgeous and stunning color sense to this satisfyingly traditional palette. This is not an opportunity which will present itself again anytime soon, so if you are serious about possessing a rarity by an artist of ever-increasing renown, and a piece that is nearly guaranteed to increase in value, this piece fits the bill. Because of the exceptional nature of this offering, the make an offer feature is set not below but above the listed price. Great opportunity for museum or curator acquisition here.
