This is a genuine Ancient Greek coin from Circa 350-300 BC set into handcrafted Sterling Silver pendant bezel. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, polishing cloth, velvet pouch and gift box.
The boy on the dolphin didrachm originates from the Greek Colony of Tarentum (Present day Taranto). Tarentum was one of the most important and wealthiest of Greek City-States in Southern Italy during the Fifth and Fourth Centuries BC. Tarentum and the area of Southern Italy flourished under the Greeks, and soon their cultural achievements in architecture, arts and literature, earned the area the name of “Magna Graecia”. The end of the Greek domination of Tarentum came in 272 BC when the city surrendered to the Romans.
On the front of the didrachm is a nude horseman. On the reverse is the nude boy Taras. THE MOTIF OF THE BOY ON A DOLPHIN ALLUDES TO THE ANCIENT GREEK MYTH IN WHICH A DOLPHIN WAS SENT BY TARAS’ FATHER (THE GOD POSEIDON), TO SAVE TARAS FROM A SHIPWRECK. THE DOLPHIN CARRIED TARAS SAFELY TO SHORE, AND AT THE POINT OF THEIR LANDING THE CITY WAS ESTABLISHED.
The boy on a dolphin is a most beautiful example of the Greek Period of Later Fine Art, that of the highest artistic level and most inspired creations of Ancient Greece and “Magna Graecia”. These silver Didrachms remain a miracle to hold in ones hand for their timeless beauty, antiquity and history.
