One of the most difficult things about Chinese metal works, such as this bronze is dating a piece. Often on the market we see Bronze Incense burners labeled Ming with Ming period markings on the bottom, and yet their being sold for $75.00, which is ridiculous. On eBay I see many pieces like that which are coming from China, and quite frankly they are extremely well done fakes.
Now to my offering;
If you look at the pictures you will see a deeply patinated dark Bronze owing to its long exposure to the atmosphere. The openings are all characters from the I Ching, some of which denote balance, stability and wholeness. The interior denotes much use over a long period. It has an uneven quality of patina which cannot be faked. There is no damage with the exception that the lid is slightly out of round, likely due to having been dropped at many times. It still fits well.
Another aspect that identifies Ming metalwork is that ultimately the lines of the object are clean and uncluttered.
