This is a 20th c. wood mask that was carved and decorated with paint and hand-cut mirrored facets. The back side shows the tool marks of the carver. There are signs of age where decoration has been lost and original gold paint retouched. It is still an intruguing ethnic collectible. These fearsome works of art are placed as guardians at entrances to buildings to frighten other evil entities away. Mask making in Thailand is an art that is a thousand years old but this mask is about fifty years old and was acquired as a keepsake of a many-storied land. Needless to say it is one of a kind.
Measures 10 5/8" height 7 1/4" wide 2 3/8" depth (distance from flat surface when laid down)
Thickness of the piece of wood used to carve the mask is 1 1/8" to 5/8" and varies across the mask. The paint colors are dark blue, dark red, metallic gold, black.
