1961 U.S. FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS COLORADO SPRINGS, CO DVD
"Sure, the film quality is not the same as modern television, but this gives a fascinating window into the time, and into the state of the sport of figure skating then (some of the athletes do routines that would be amazing now; others' may seem sedate and/or tame to a 21st-century audience). If you have read anything about the ensuing tragedy, watching this brings the young skaters behind the sad list of names poignantly to life. They had no idea how little time was left to them, and they are so wonderfully vibrant that at times it can be hard to watch. But it's worth doing so to see these talented young stars giving it their best, which is how they deserve to be remembered."
The first U.S. Championships to be broadcast on national television, the 1961 Championships in Colorado Springs would be the first, and last, time figure skating fans from around the country would ever see these extraordinary skaters compete together...the same talented men and women would tragically lose their lives just weeks later in a plane crash en route to the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague. For the first time on DVD, view the complete, uninterrupted, full-length broadcast of this seminal event as it originally aired.
