Style Folk Art
This is the second painting by folk artist Len Gouffer which I have seen with the title "Somewhere." the last time I checked, there was another painting by this artist with that title on this site. Maybe it was customary for this artist to adopt the philosophical stance of reminding us of the contingency of place. the great thing about collecting folk art is that you are helping to create a new canon of the future.... Because these artists are slowly emerging into the American consciousness, it is your own taste and personal loves which should determine your collection. I think that's the great fun in the discovery of folk art, which hides in all the corners of this great and varied country. "I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear"... Walt Whitman wrote. what folk artists lack in classical training, they more than make up for in inspiration. The use of color in this winter landscape is just sumptuous. The purples that are hinting at how cold the sky actually is on this day ...the wonderful detail in the grasses that are sticking up from the frozen pond. . .this darkness of the branches with their dusting of snow. I'm thinking this is a Pennsylvania winter. Possibly Lancaster County. painting measures 18 x 14 and is behind glass. The frame is in decent condition, structurally sound with little bits of wear. A great find for the collector of Americana and by an artist whose works are becoming increasingly scarce. Signed and dated on the reverse 1978.
