GERMAN SCHOOL 1868: THE MOUNTAINS NEAR POLAND, ATTRACTIVE ROMANTIC LANDSCAPE, EMINENT WOMAN PHILANTHROPIST
A little exploration on in Web helps to locate the place where this very nice landscape watercolor was created in 1868. The mountains are called the Riessengebirge, on the farthest easter edge of Germany, and the place name indicated, Bad Warmbrunn, is now part of a Polish town, Jelenia Góra. The artist has dated and initialed, lower left, and the Belgian colleague from whom I obtained this picture has identified her as Emilie Jenisch (1828-1899), an important philanthropist active in women's issues Her story is an interesting one!
Dimensions are about 7.5 inches by 11.25 inches, on a 19th century cardboard mount with a handwritten inscription.. I see a repaired corner, upper right. Condition is otherwise quite good. A touching memento of a life spent helping others. Modestly priced. Shipping will be $10 within the U.S.
