Up for sale, a 1979 Greco EG800 triple pickup LP Custom electric guitar in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original Greco-branded faux leather gigbag. This expertly crafted Japanese guitar clearly takes its cues from its Gibson cousin (no relation), and while this Greco falls squarely under the umbrella of the famed "lawsuit" guitars in a general sense, no action was ever taken against Greco for these very faithful iterations.
Produced at the Fujigen factory just prior to Greco's Super Real line of instruments, this EG800 has a distinctive look designed to capitalize on Ace Frehley's now iconic triple pickup Cherry Sunburst Custom, with Greco going so far as to name check Frehley in their '79 catalog description. The guitar features a carved two-piece maple top, mahogany body, and the original trio of Maxon-made U-2000 humbuckers with double cream bobbins, delivering a great spin on the classic PAF tone. The pickups boast ample harmonic content, great punch, and an overall full and rich tonal character, and there's plenty of bite and chime in the top end too. The guitar weighs 9lbs 10oz. An elegant and easy to play LP, this Greco has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with low action, solid intonation and fresh 10-46 strings.
The three-piece maple neck has a modestly chunky C profile carve with round shoulders and more heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .860" deep at the 1st fret and .960" at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard is the only feature of the instrument that's a bit more akin to an LP Standard, although the pearloid block inlays and binding still reference a Custom. The fretboard retains the original medium jumbo frets with fret edge binding, offering plenty of meat and their full factory height. The frets show just a hint of wear under the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-2, and virtually no wear further up the fretboard, playing cleanly in every register. The original nut is a hand-carved piece of bone for optimal sustain and clarity, measuring 1 11/16" in width. The headstock has multi-ply binding, the classic "open book" shape, and split diamond pearl inlay. The gold Grover Rotomatic-style Greco-branded tuners turn very smoothly and hold pitch well, and the D79-prefix serial translates to April of 1979.
All of the electronics function as intended, with original date stamps on the baseplates of the Maxon-made humbucker trio and full-size pots that all date to 1978. The hardware retains the majority of its gold plating with uniform surface patina, and the amber speed knobs are clean as can be. The Cherry Sunburst gloss finish highlights the grain of the carved two-piece maple top, framed by multi-ply cream binding. Cosmetic wear includes pick scuffing across the strum path, with some faint nicks and finish scratches consistent with very light, careful use. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss finish.
The original Greco faux leather gigbag is included.
