RAUL JOSE MINA-MORA ( MINAMORA ) WAS BORN IN SANTA ANA, EL SALVADOR IN 1914. THE SON OF A WEALTHY COFFEE PLANTATION OWNER, MINAMORA CAME TO SAN FRANCISCO IN 1924 WHERE HE STUDIED AT THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS (SAN FRANCISCO). HE CONTINUED AT THE ART STUDENTS LEAGUE IN NEW YORK UNDER HOWARD TRAFTON AND LATER IN AUSTRIA UNDER HART. IN THE LATE 1930S MINAMORA WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE WPA. THE THEMES OF AMERICAN SCENE WORKERS IN CONSTRUCTION, THE RAILROADS AND ROUSTABOUTS, CONTINUED IN HIS LATER WORKS.
After serving in the army in Europe during World War ll, Minamora returned to San Francisco where he was active as a commercial artist. In San Francisco he served as Art Director for Hanna Advertising Agency and worked actively as a free-lance artist for several of the major advertising agencies in San Francisco. In the post war years he made several painting trips to Spain and Portugal. After 1948, Mina-Mora maintained a studio for several years in Manhattan at the Sutton Town House on East 56th. St.
Highly successful as a commercial artist, Minamora's full page illustrations often appeared in Time Magazine, Fortune Magazine, Collier's Magazine and other national publications and books. He painted much of the magazine and other advertising art for the New York World's Fair and the classic film "2001" including designing the record album covers for the film and others. He also did mural work in the late 30s.
In his later years Minamora settled in Oakdale, Long Island where he concentrated on fine art. Although Mina-Mora began painting fine art as early as the 1930s, he fully concentrated on fine art, painting in gouache, casein, watercolor and oils, from the late 1950s on. *( His works are sometimes confused with those of his wife, Doris Minamora, an amateur painter, who is known to have signed with his name. ).
