This is a Inuit sculpture likely made by Joy Hallauk. Her name is on the bottom in syllabics. She is from the Eskimo Point area of Canada. It is in wonderful condition.
It measures 5" tall and 4" at the widest point.
The carving is soapstone. The carving has a large head on the top and what appears to be four faces along the bottom sides. I believe the sculpture is that of Joy Hallauk who is known for a style of head motifs in soapstone. The carving is of a mother with her children.
Joy Hallauk (1940 - 2000) began carving in the mid 1960s. Here favorite subject matter was people, often a mother and child group. She used small axes and files to carve. Joy's carvings have juxtaposed rounded and angular masses and present dynamic as well as powerful images. Joy also crafted dolls with antler faces and wall hangings; she was an accomplished seamstress.
