_HISTORY OF RANDSBURG AND THE RAND QUADRANGLE_
In 1895 a group of prospectors were searching the hills of the Mojave Desert for gold when one of them literally tripped over a large rock and revealed the other side to be completely covered in gold. They quickly recorder claims on what would become one of the largest and most valuable mines in the country; the Yellow Aster Mine.
Discovery of such a large deposit of gold caused the prospectors to hire one of the best geologists in the world to evaluate the site. He noticed that the mineral types and density of the material resembled one of the largest mines in South Africa; the Randburg Mine. The settlement was named Rand Camp in honor of this discovery. Soon after offer was made on the property (Yellow Aster Mine) of $500,000 in 1895 based on this assessment.
In the 1980s an open pit mine was developed at the site operating for approximately 20 years. Over 20,000,000 tons of low grade ore and barren material was removed to depths of around 500 feet. Peak production was reached in the year 2000 at 100,000 oz of gold. Records suggest over 1,000,000 oz of gold was recovered from the district. Large scale gold mining has ended at this time.
The district had a scheelite discover in 1904. Over $10,000,000 worth or scheelite was recovered from 1905 to 1920. Silver was discovered in 1919 and the Rand Silver Mine developed. It is legendary for having pockets containing 13,000 oz of silver to the ton. Over 1,000,000 tons of ore and barren material was removed. Silver production in the district was over 20,000,000 oz. Large scale scheelite and silver mining has ended at this time.
SOME MINING ACTIVITY CONTINUES TODAY, WITH CLAIMS BY HOBBYISTS, AND MINING CLUBS. SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY HAS A LONG HISTORY OF PRODUCING GOLD.
