Marc Chagall (1887-1985) original lithograph "Dan II" in colors on thick wove paper. Executed under the supervision of the artist. First edition, 1962. Printed by Mourlet Freres of Paris. Framed. Certificate of Authenticity included.
The Tribe of Dan: Dan was the first son of Jacob and Bilhah. He was known to be wise and fair. The Tribe of Dan struggled to maintain land and suffered oppression at the hands of the Philistines. Samson, one of the greatest judges, came from the Tribe of Dan, yet many of Dan’s leaders worshiped false idols and suffered for their treacherous beliefs.
"When Matisse dies," Pablo Picasso remarked, "Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is." Picasso claimed he was not a fan of the "flying violins and all the folklore, but his canvases are really painted, not just thrown together." He followed up by saying, "There's never been anybody since Renoir who has the feeling for light that Chagall has."
