THIS LISTING IS FOR ONE NEW SHEET OF 20 _YEAR 2000 _33¢ STAMPS FROM 1999.
_BRAND NEW SHEET, SEALED IN ORIGINAL USPS PACKAGING. MINT. MNH. NO FLAWS. FROM A SMOKE-FREE AND PET-FREE ENVIRONMENT._
THIS PANE OF 20 SELF-ADHESIVE STAMPS, ISSUED BY THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE ON DECEMBER 27, 1999 IN WASHINGTON, DC, CELEBRATES THE YEAR 2000. IT FEATURES JOSEPH CHRISTIAN (J.C.) LEYENDECKER'S ILLUSTRATION FROM THE JANUARY 2, 1937 COVER OF _THE SATURDAY EVENING POST_ - OF A BABY IN A TOP HAT RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR AND BLOWING A HORN AMID STREAMERS AND CONFETTI. THE GOLD CIRCLE VISIBLE BEHIND THE BABY WAS PART OF LEYENDECKER’S DESIGN, AND HIS SIGNATURE CAN BE SEEN BELOW THE BABY’S COWBELL. THE ARRIVAL OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM WAS AN EXCITING MOMENT FOR PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD, AND THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE ISSUED THIS STAMP TO HONOR THIS EXTRA SPECIAL NEW YEAR’S DAY.
AS THE _SATURDAY EVENING POST_’S MOST IMPORTANT COVER ARTIST OF HIS DAY, J.C. LEYENDECKER (1874-1951) ILLUSTRATED ALL THE HOLIDAY NUMBERS, AS WELL AS MANY IN-BETWEEN. HIS EASTER, INDEPENDENCE DAY, THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS COVERS WERE ANNUAL EVENTS FOR THE _POST’S_ MILLIONS OF READERS. LEYENDECKER GAVE US WHAT IS PERHAPS THE MOST ENDURING NEW YEAR’S SYMBOL, THAT OF THE NEW YEAR’S BABY. FOR ALMOST FORTY YEARS, THE _POST_ FEATURED A LEYENDECKER BABY ON ITS NEW YEAR’S COVERS.
BETWEEN 1896 AND 1950, J.C. LEYENDECKER PAINTED MORE THAN FOUR HUNDRED MAGAZINE COVERS. DURING "THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION", THE _SATURDAY EVENING POST_ ALONE COMMISSIONED HIM TO PRODUCE 322 COVERS AS WELL AS MANY ADVERTISEMENT ILLUSTRATIONS FOR ITS INTERIOR PAGES. NO OTHER ARTIST, UNTIL THE ARRIVAL OF NORMAN ROCKWELL TWO DECADES LATER, WAS SO SOLIDLY IDENTIFIED WITH ONE PUBLICATION. LEYENDECKER'S APPROACH TO HIS CAREER INFLUENCED THE ART OF ILLUSTRATION AND HE BECAME MENTOR TO AN ENTIRE GENERATION OF YOUNGER ARTISTS, MOST NOTABLY NORMAN ROCKWELL, WHO BEGAN HIS CAREER BY SPECIFICALLY EMULATING LEYENDECKER.
