This is an interesting coin. In the early 1800s Brazil started using with widely circulated Spanish colonial "Pieces of Eight" or 8 reales coins as blanks for their own coinage. While the striking process was intended to obliterate the original surfaces of the Spanish coins, it was occasionally possible to see some design of the Spanish coin bleeding through the details of the Brazillian coin. This is a good example of that situation.
