HISTORY OF LONE PINE/INDEPENCE/KEARSARGE GOLD RUSH
Independence began as a US Army Camp established by Lieutenant Colonel George S. Evans on Independence Day, 1862. Evans established the camp at the request of local settlers.
Gold was discovered in 1864, soon after Ore processing began, “One lot of 10 tons of ore is said to have yielded $900 per ton (Goodyear, 1888)”. The mine owners received a total of $9,000 excitedly the Kearsarge mining camp was born, located just below the 12,621-foot-high peak and east of the Kearsarge Pass.
The news of “Rich Ore at the Kearsarge Camp” spread and the Kearsarge Mining District was established. In 1865 the Kearsarge Mining Company drove a 55’ long tunnel into the southeast side of the mountain, reaching $650+ per ton ore.
Some mining activity continues today, with claims by hobbyists, and mining clubs. Inyo County has a long history of producing gold. The auction is for Mineral Rights only.
The land belongs to the Federal Government. This is an outright sale of mineral rights.
