3 1/2" 17 degree Standard Railhead Rock Bit

A HDD tool that allows machines to drill through some conditions that would otherwise require a mud motor. It fractures rock in a random elliptical pattern and is similar to a flat bill bit in softer formations, however, when drilling in harder formations it is important to not force the bit, but to let it drill at it's own pace.

The Railhead Product.
The Railhead Original Rock bit is a creation of Railhead Manufacturing Inc. out of Springtown, Texas. This remarkable invention was the compilation of creative efforts by an eclectic, but cleverly inventive team. The teamwork of Railhead Mfg. Inc, was not limited to the creation of the drill bit for Horizontal Directional Drilling, but was responsible for a team of end user support, dealer and dealer network support, and field training.
RMI was alone in its desire to train the HDD contractor as well a provide the most practical product, lowest per foot investment, as well as outstanding warranty for quality product.
All of RMI's product was manufactured from precision techniques, out of high quality alloys, with competent heat treating and testing. The value of that product is representative of durability.
Many Railhead Rock Bits on the 3 to 3-1/2 size range are noteable to give a better than 70,000 foot lifespan when properly maintained and operated.
This is quite possible the ONLY bit that will function in ALL soil conditions without the need of anchoring the drill rack in place.
The Railhead bit will function in virtually ALL formations, with less effort, more steer-ability than any other HDD tool. It now appears to be the MOST copied drilling system in the world, but with out a doubt, NOTHING performs with the ORIGINAL Railhead product.
Question over 3 or 3 1/8 housing.
This is a current production of the original Railhead 3" standard housing and rock bit.
The housing has the 2" UNJ straight thread Spud Drive with 2 1/2 in hex collar.
The sonde housing is specific for Digitrak or RadioDetect sonde.
Lead rods and adapters are available through multiple sources like GUS, and Radius Manufacturing.
This housing was reproduced for a specific end user and is now being sold off as the service contract has ended with the end user.
The 3 1/8 bit you are referring to is a misnomer created to distinguish between the oversized aggressive 17x17 bit for the 2 3/4 and 3 in platforms to accept the larger shank rock points.
The 3 1/8 (so called) housing was an attempt by a copy-cat manufacturer to fix a housing failure created by low quality alloy steel, and the use of "Sonde Blocks" that seriously impacted the structural integrity of the housing itself.
The 2 3/4 and 3 in sonde housings were NEVER engineered to handle multiple sonde types by use of sonde blocks, or sonde adapters.
Universal sonde adapters has turned out to be more problematic than practical, and RMI , the original creator of the Railhead product, has abandoned the sonde block systems, and returned to a more practical approach.
