Tuscany Book offers
A LEAF FROM A RARE INCUNABULUM WITH A FULL PAGE WOODCUT
Opera, edited by Peter Schott and Geiler von Kaiserberg printed at Basel in 1489 by Nikolaus Kessler.
Bibliographical information: Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke 1489.
The verso side of the title page of part 1 of J. Gerson's opera shows the author as a pilgrim with a dog outside of a castle complex.
The recto side gives interesting information about the leaf and presumably about the book which contained the title page: The canonicus Erhart Schauer of Eichstaett (the home of Besler's Hortus Eystettensis) donated the leaf to the Cloister Rebdorf at Schamhaupten where it was until 1551 when the Cathedral preacher of Augsburg, Johannes Faber of Heilbronn (1504-58) bought the leaf on February 2, 1551 and donated it to the dominican monks at Augsburg.
THE LITERAL TRANSLATION OF THE LATIN WORD "INCUNABULUM" IS 'INFANT'S CRADLE' AND ALLUDES TO THE FACT THAT PRINTING AT THAT TIME WAS IN ITS INFANCY. THE FACT THAT A BOOK WAS PRINTED BEFORE 1500 IS SIGNIFICANT IN THAT ITS VALUE IS MUCH GREATER THAN IF IT HAD BEEN PRINTED AFTER 1501.
CONDITION OF THE LEAF: As shown, in acceptable condition on hand-made paper. Besides evidence of prior mounting, there is some evidence of ageing or use, like edge flaws, old writing, etc. I will mention flaws that cannot be seen on the photographs.
SIZE OF THE LEAF: ca. 12.1"x 8.4"(307 mm x 215 mm).
PICTURED: Both sides of the leaf for sale.
