The best of Vannutelli in figurative watercolor: a sensitive character study beautifully composed in the classic Italian figurative tradition of such masters as Tiepolo.
Scipione Vannutelli was born in Rome in 1831. His father was opposed to his study of art, but he ultimately found a position as a pupil of Tommaso Minardi, then of the Viennese painter, Karl Wursinger, and later studied in Paris. Active in the Romantic style, he was successful in the Parisian Salon exhibition of 1864 when he gained the praise of art historian Léon Lagrange. He continued to paint mainly figurative and historical subjects depicting, for example _Fra Girolamo Savonarola_, _Mary Stuart at the Scaffold_ (Pitti Palace, Florence), and the _Funeral of Juliet_ (1888, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Rome). He had a studio in the Palazzo Pamphili on Piazza Navona and was named as the superintendent of the Royal Calcografia (Engraving) Ministry. His daughter Giuseppina Vannutelli was also a painter. In1864, he obtained a medal at the Paris Exposition with the canvas:_Stroll of the Noblemen under__ the Ducal Palace of Venice_, which typified his fidelity to architecture and costume of the period of the Venetian republic. He also painted _La festa del Redentore_ in Venice; _The Dream of Venus_; _The invitation to Dance_; _Le mantellate_; _Odalisque in the Harem_, and portraits of King Vittorio Emanuele after death, and of Umberto I, in his dress of the Order of the Giarrettiera; _La leggitrice_; _Sulla riva del mare_; _Bebé_; and _Ciociari e Giulietta Capuleti_, exhibited in Bologna, in 1888. Vannutelli was named knight of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, member of many Academies, and for many years was president of the Circolo Artistico of Rome.
