Custom Detail Set of Four Austrian Bentwood Chairs Josef Kohn
SET OF FOUR AUSTRIAN BENTWOOD NO. 36 "ANGEL CHAIRS"
_By Josef Kohn for Mondus, circa 1900; one chair with partial label remaining
Item # 010QID22K _
A fine set of late 19th century dining chairs designed by Josef Kohn and manufactured by Mundus, one still retaining the original label remnants, this is offered as no. 36 in his catalogue and is a quite rare form with the little circle in the crest flanked by "wings". This is the chair Howard Carter is pictured using in 1922 while examining King Tutankhamen. They are finished in a caning that remains in overall excellent condition.
We have four additional side chairs and two arm chairs inventoried separately that may still be available - check our inventory or contact us if these interest you.
_Measurements: 19 5/8" D x 35 1/4" H x 18" W x 18 3/8" H to seat_
Caning is old but not original: one chair seat has a bit of cracking to the caning around the edges and some light stretching, all others in excellent condition. Joints have been tightened with modern screws supplementing throughout. One chair does not have front leg blocking, but this appears to be the original design. Discolorations, scars and other blemishes from time and use - gorgeous shellac finished surface with beautifully developed overall patina.
