The historic Hales headframe sits over the two compartment shaft down over 1300 feet. The shaft and headframe were refurbished by Alta Gold and in use until about 2000. The headframe, workshop and small outbuildings are on the patented property.
Tybo dates to 1870 when an Indian disclosed the location of the rich ores to prospectors. The book "Martha and the Doctor" gives a firsthand account of the early days in Tybo.
In the 1930's this property belonged to the Treadwell-Yukon Mining Company and at that time it was the largest producer of lead/silver/ zinc in the United States. Employing over 100 men. Today there are 2 residents in the old ghost town.
There is a HUGE mine dump! See photos. Assays of the dump material done by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology in the 1980's show over 29 oz. per ton in silver.
The historical photo shows the property circa 1931. The Hales is shown at the top of the photo on the left hand side.
