Franz Walter Bergmann was famous for his boldly painted modernist figurative murals and oil paintings. His early influence was that of his father who was a painter as well as a librarian at the University of Vienna.
Bergmann, who early in his career listed his name as Walter Bergman, enrolled in the Vienna National Academy of Art after serving in World War I, and graduated with honors in 1925. He then moved to the United States and lived in New York, Colorado, and Chicago, before settling in San Francisco, California, in 1929. There he worked as a WPA post office muralist and a painter, having also painted murals in Chicago for the Sir Francis Drake Hotel as well as the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco. It's possible that this work was also exhibited at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in Chicago to accompany his mural decor there. The dramatic theme and bold Modernist figurative composition suggest that it may have hung in the hotel's bar.
Bergmann also painted murals for the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco in 1939 and taught at the California School of Fine Art. His works were well received by the local press and he was in great demand as a muralist. In addition, Bergman was known to have authored and illustrated books for juveniles including _This Way to the Circus_ (1938) and _San Francisco Flips_ (1946). Bergmann was also a highly talented watercolorist and graphic artists. His early Modernist figurative oils from the 1920s are rare.
He was a member of the San Francisco Art Association and the San Francisco Art Center. Bergman exhibited locally in San Francisco and in other parts of the nation. In 1926 he showed his work at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Architectural League in New York City in 1927, and the Santa Fe Art Museum in 1936. In San Francisco he exhibited with the San Francisco Art Association between 1929 and 1936. Work is represented in the collection of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor Museum: work exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Corcoran Gallery Museum in Washington DC. _NOTE: Works from the 1920 have sold for up to $11,500 in auction.
